Objectives

Cell culture systems are essential tools for understanding molecular and cellular phenomena which may account for a variety of human disorders. The IdiPAZ Cell Culture Division provides tissue- and cell- related technologies to specialized research groups to explore molecular, cellular, pharmacological, and genetic processes.

In an effort to provide convenient basis to develop Biomedical and Health Sciences Research initiatives, and as part of IdiPAZ ongoing commitment to the scientific community, the Cell Culture Unit was established as a platform to offer technology and professional technical assistance. This principle of action is guided operationally by the access to knowledge, resources, equipment, training and qualified support, that meet the needs of both clinic and basic groups and encourage collaborative alliances. It contributes not only to achieve the goals of translational research but also to the reinforcement of the scientific knowledge, integrating and implementing novel applications and technologies, besides providing guidance to innovation. The activity of this Unit is further supported by complementary actions developed by other divisions and laboratories belonging to IdiPAZ. These provide an interactive and dynamic scientific stage to meet the aims of IdiPAZ and external researchers.

The conception of this Platform, mainly based in a shared organizational structure with a noted interaction with multidisciplinary researchers and other IdiPAZ divisions, guarantees its ongoing growth, development and constant improvement.

The Cell Culture Unit is currently equipped with the following facilities:

• Inverted microscope Nikon DIAPHOT TMD (Phase contrast objectives 4 ×, 10 × and 40 ×) attached to a Nikon D80 digital camera

• Microscope Leica DMIL (Phase contrast objectives 4 ×, 10 ×, 40 × and 63 ×) attached to a Canon Powershot S70 digital camera

INCUBATORS

• 3 ThermoForma Model 310 CO2 incubators 4

• 1 HERAcell CO2 incubator

• 2 BIOTECH Galaxy S CO2 incubators

• 1 CULTEK IR 1500 CO2 incubator

• 1 ThermoForma Scientific CO2 incubator

This equipment is supplemented by a centralized gas system which ensures a constant and suitable CO2 supply

Applications

 Experiment and establish cell cultures from different sources, both primary and established cell lines.
