Method for the diagnosis of unstable atherosclerotic plaque

Developed by: Fundación Vasca de Innovación e investigación Sanitaria

Description

Carotid artery atherosclerosis is one of the main risk factors that may lead to cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). The processes that trigger CVA are complex and hence identifying biomarkers that can be used in diagnostic approaches is difficult, and there are no tests available to help identify stable and unstable plaque or to evaluate the risk of developing a CVA.

This invention provides a method based on determining the level of expression of certain biomarkers to diagnose unstable atherosclerotic plaque and to predict the probability of suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Applications

Diagnosis of unstable atherosclerotic plaque.

Prognosis of the probability of suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Selection of patients susceptible to receiving treatment to eliminate or stabilise carotid atherosclerotic plaque.

Estado de protección
