The SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a private, non-profit institution that has become one of the most important specialized pediatric centers in Europe.

As a University Hospital, we contribute to the training of healthcare professionals together with the Universitat de Barcelona.

Founded by the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God in 1867, the Hospital has 150 years of experience. Nowadays, the Hospital has 339 beds and 12 operating rooms, it registers more than 25.000 discharges each year, recieve more than 200.000 visits for external consultations and has 115 emergency rooms. More than 4.000 children are born each year in the hospital and 14.000 surgeries are performed. The Hospital has a collaboration agreement to treat some pathologies with the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

 

The Hospital, with the support of the Sant Joan de Déu Research Foundation and the Innovation Unit, promotes innovation and research, both basic and transitional, to answer the questions that formulate the diagnosis and treatment of their patients with the goal of achieving a higher quality care.

Sant Joan de Déu Research Foundation was created in 2002 in order to cover the research activity carried out both in the biomedical and social fields, in the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, In the Sanitary Park of Sant Boi del Llobregat and in other centers of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John Of God. The purpose of the Foundation is to contribute to the improvement of the health and well-being of individuals, by promoting, supporting and coordinating the research carried out in the centers of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God according to their values: Hospitality, Respect, Quality, Responsibility ans Spirituality.

 

The Foundation's research area covers 7 areas of knowledge, mainly in the fields of maternal and child health and mental health, and it's organized around 3 groups: The Colsolidated Groups, the emerging Groups and the Training Groups. Its main results in 2015 are: 342 active competitive projects, 205 clinical trials carried out, 418 publications and an impact factor of 1529.

The Innovation Unit was created in 2009 with the main objective of giving vent to the innovative ideas of the professionals of the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, both care and non-care. The mission of the Innovation Unit is to transform excellence in research and clinical care in new products, services and processes that improve the patients experience, the population's health and decrease the cost for the provision of health services.

 

Since its inception, the Innovation Unit has analyzed more than 150 projects and implemented more than 100 of which 100 have been implemented. Nowadays 39 projects are active, being their patients its main beneficiaries.

It has developed 42 patents (15 national and 27 international), and 3 Utility Models that have generated 1 spin-off and 2 start-ups and transfered 10 licenses of use to the industry. In addition, it has collaborated with more than 100 companies, national and international.
