The Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron Biobank (HUVH Biobank) is a research support unit that collects human biological samples for biomedical research purposes in compliance with current legislation, and whose objective is to make available to the scientific community the biological material necessary for research in optimal conditions to ensure competitiveness and research excellence.
Biomedical research is a key tool for improving knowledge of diseases and for developing methods of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases that improve the quality and life expectancy of human beings. Therefore, in the last years there has been a growing interest in the development of human samples biorepositories of a variety of human diseases.
The Biomedical Research Law (Law 14/2007, of July the 3rd, Biomedical Research) and Royal Decree 1716/2011 (Royal Decree that developed after the Biomedical Research Law) were passed to regulate the proper collection, storage and use of biological samples of human origin, and to promote their use for biomedical research by following good ethical and scientific practices.
Vall d’Hebron biomedical research projects that use human biological samples require ethical and methodological assessment and also approval by the Ethics Committee of Clinical Research of Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron.

The HUVH Biobank was authorized on April 2nd, 2013, by the Direcció General de Planificació i Recerca en Salut del Departament de Sanitat de la Generalitat de Catalunya according to “Real Decreto 1716/2011, de 18 de noviembre, por el que se establecen los requisitos básicos de autorización y funcionamiento de los biobancos con fines de investigación biomédica y del tratamiento de las muestras biológicas de origen humano, y se regula el funcionamiento y organización del Registro Nacional de Biobancos para investigación biomédica”.
